In a recent interview with Futbol Emotion (via Sport), Barcelona winger Ansu Fati revealed that he is honoured to wear the number ten jersey for the Catalan club. When asked about the number ten jersey, Fati said,

“For me, it’s an honor to wear the number 10 jersey and I want to thank Barça for giving me the opportunity to have it. It’s a number with a huge history at the club. It makes me want to work and improve myself day by day and year after year.”

Fati’s current contract with Barcelona is set to run out in the summer of 2027. Now that he has been given the number ten jersey, it might motivate the youngster to take his game up a level in the coming seasons.

The 19-year-old has made a decent start to this campaign after producing a few eye-catching displays for Barca in the final third. The Spanish winger has registered two goals and two assists in seven matches for the Catalan giants this season across multiple competitions.

Fati has seen all of his playing opportunities come off the bench but has done well to average 1.4 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per game in La Liga. He has even distributed the ball relatively well in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 82.1% in league football (stats via whoscored).

Fati can use his pace to get the better of his marker in the final third and is proficient at making some dangerous runs with the ball out on the flanks. The Spanish speedster has got the vision to play a decisive pass in the opponent’s half and can chip in by scoring his fair share of goals up top. He is primarily a left-winger but can also play on the right flank or act as a striker down the middle if needed.

Fati is currently an important member of Xavi‘s match-day squad. However, he has fallen behind Ousmane Dembele in Barcelona‘s pecking order.

Still, giving him the famous number ten jersey could prove to be a good move by Barca as it will motivate him to get better over the next few years. At 19, Fati has got a bright future ahead at the Nou Camp, so it’s a win-win situation for both the player and the Catalan club.
