Crawley Town will become the first club in English football to launch an NFT-only change strip.

The League Two club were taken over by WAGMI United in April, an American investment group that wants to plug into Web3, crypto and NFT communities to bring new revenue streams into a club they believe can earn multiple promotions in short order.

And Friday will see what is being billed as a major announcement by Crawley’s new hierarchy, with the eye-catching decision to make their third kit available to those who invest in the club’s NFT – which launches next month.

They will also reveal further details of the club’s ownership group.

“Last season the club sold two different kits in the club shop. That will be the same for this season but on top of that, a third kit will be sold via NFT,” Crawley co-owner Preston Johnson explained to i.

“It will be an exclusive shirt you can get if you have an NFT and then there will be two options – for those that are local or ordering online either in the UK or our American or overseas friends. It hits the spot where we think it will be extremely profitable for the club, the way we’re doing this.

“We hope the announcement gets some good attention and positivity. We think the fans will be really excited by what we announce.”

The club plan to launch their NFTs next month which will act as virtual season tickets for the overseas supporters they will attract.

They will also offer a chance to play a part in how the club is run and one of the ideas being looked at by the group is that NFT owners could potentially deciding how part of the transfer budget is spent.

“We believe we’re offering something really unique,” Johnson said.
