After much anticipation from fans and players, UCF football released new uniforms Friday morning that feature a modern take on a classic look.

Perhaps the most significant change comes in the font used for the jersey numbers and players’ names. Compared to the old jerseys, the font is stretched vertically and is thinner.

UCF shared three looks that the Knights will wear this season: a refreshed all-black uniform, an all-white outfit and a third version called “Knightmode” that showcases the new athletics “Knighthead” secondary logo that was released last November.

The special “Knightmode” jerseys use gold numbers on a black jersey similar to what the Army football team wears.

UCF athletics director Terry Mohajir first revealed to the Orlando Sentinel back in March that a change to the uniforms would be coming.

“We’ve got a new design on uniforms that we’re coming out with and really going to stay with the black and gold palette as opposed to the anthracite,” he said at the time. “I know I’ll put that out there and fans will cringe but we’re black and gold, man.”

Mohajir explained why UCF moved away from anthracite.

“We’re going to the Big 12 and we’ll be the only black and gold school, so why not use it?” he said. “The reason why people go anthracite is [that] it’s not black. So I know we like it, too, and I like anthracite jerseys and all that stuff. But I think people are going really like [the new design] — I know Coach [Gus Malzahn] does and our players do.”

In addition to the new thinner jersey numbers, the fresh uniforms include three subtle stars in a vertical line down the pants on one side.

While these are three primary types of uniforms the Knights will wear, the special space-themed uniforms aren’t going anywhere.

The annual “Space Game” is scheduled for Oct. 13 when UCF hosts Temple. Those uniforms will be released at a later date.

The new-look Knights kick off their season on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ against South Carolina State inside FBC Mortgage Stadium.
